From Pragmatism to Interaction Design: A Sociotechnical Design Space

چکیده

This article presents an approach to interaction design that is inspired by sociotechnical systems (STS) and grounded in sociocultural theory. The focus is on the early phases of the design process and in particular how theoretical ideas can stimulate design. It starts by surveying key works in theory-based design in HCI and CSCW. The notion of ‘externalized design’ of buildings has been adopted as a framework for how to incorporate conceptual (non-computational) artifacts in user interfaces. The framework is applied to the retrospective analysis of an interactive system developed by the author (Janus). The system was stimulated by the notion of reflection-in-action. A three-staged process provides gradual steps for translating reflection-in-action into a concrete user interface: 1) selection, 2) appropriation, and 3) translation. The article ends by discussing strengths and limitations of the approach, and identifies directions for further work. [Article copies are available for purchase from InfoScion-Demand.com]

Applied Pragmatism and Interaction Design

This chapter presents a translational approach to socio-technical design, as a new approach to the theorybased design of user interfaces, supported by a multi-stage process. A survey of the early work on theorybased design in HCI identifies the strengths and limitations of this approach. This new approach extends HCI with a socio-cultural perspective, and adopts creative practices from the fiel...

Sociotechnical System Design for Learning: Bridging the Digital Divide with CompILE

CompILE is a sociotechnical “comprehensive interactive learning environment” system for personal knowledge management and visualization that represents the growing collective knowledge an individual gathers throughout his or her lifespan. A network of intelligent agents connects the user and his or her inhabited knowledge space to external information sources and a multitude of fellow users. Fo...

Group dynamics meet cognition: combining socio-technical concepts and usability engineering in the design of information syste

Socio-Technical Systems Theory (STST) has been widely mentioned and applied in the domain of information systems implementation (see e.g. Eason [1], Mumford [2]). Dillon and Morris [3] argue that the term STST is now generally applied to many user-centered orientations to design and implementation. Unlike the pragmatism of usability engineering which aims to support the design of technologies t...

. . . . . . . . . . Social , . Semiotic , . and . Technical

There are many attempts to explain success and failure in information systems. Many of these refer to a purported sociotechnical gap. In this chapter, we develop an alternative approach that does not impose such a strong dichotomy, but regards social and technical rather as dimensions along which to study work practices. The developed theory involves not only the “social” and “technical” constr...

Effective Socio-Cultural Factors on Sustainable Design of Urban Space

The study of design and formation of urban space focuses on interaction of human and environment. This is an attractive subject that considers as interdisciplinary debates. Thinkers of urban studies pay attention to this matter empirically and theoretically in order to provide a desirable space for human being. This research is based on the theories of urban studies and urban sociology and so o...
